Environmental Analysis
All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are an improved environmental solution to current lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. With better energy density, ASSLBs are smaller and more efficient and, in addition, use materials that promise an increased life cycle and higher level of safety, meaning they are more durable and last longer.
To better understand the total carbon footprint of ASSLBs, defined as the total greenhouse gas emissions generated directly or indirectly by the battery, our environmental assessment team will conduct an in-depth review of the total product life cycle, from cradle to grave. We will use a life cycle assessment tool to analyze and compare the carbon footprints of different materials, and to consider the raw metal extraction process, electrode fabrication and production, and the recyclability of the final product at end-of-life.
This team’s assessment will give crucial information to support future decisions on material selection for ASSLBs and help define sustainable manufacturing and production processes.
